South Korea Strengthens its Phthalate Requirements in Common Safety Standards for Children's Products

On 2021-07-19, the South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) made an announcement (Notice No. 2021 - 132) of a revision of "Common Safety Standards for Children's Products", which applies to products that are used by or used for children under the age of 13, but does not apply to inaccessible components of a children’s product during normal use.

 

Changes:

In this revision, additional designation of a new substance, DIBP, is added to the currently regulated 6 types of phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP and DnOP).

 

The reason for this revision is to protect children, who are considered as a safety-vulnerable class, from harmful substances, and to strengthen the standards for phthalate-based chemicals in the "Common Safety Standards for Children's Products" that all children's products must comply with.

 

After this revision, the updated list of control for the 7 types of phthalates is as follows:

Effective Date:

According to Article 1 (Enforcement Date) of the Notice, this new requirement shall come into effect on 2022-01-01.
